“Be like a duck. Calm on the surface, but always paddling like the dickens underneath.” – Michael Caine

PADDLE
with US

You can attend two practices at no charge to try it out and see if it is something you want to commit to. Teams meet at the Riverfront City Park dock (map).

The club provides paddles and PFDs to use while you are practicing. Wear clothing that is comfortable for the current temperature and that can get wet. For your safety, flip flops are not allowed on the boat. Please wear sunscreen, and bring water and a hat for protection. It is easy to get a sunburn with the sun reflecting off the water - even on overcast days.

The cost is $45 annual club dues, plus a $30 per month practice fee.

Thank You!

The World Beat Dragon Boat Club is accepting new paddlers. It is a great way to enjoy the beauty of the Willamette River, get a great workout and meet some really fun people.

If you'd like to join a team, or just want to go out and test the waters (pun intended), we'd be happy to have you! You do not need to be a member of an existing team to join. Individuals are welcome, and we’ll assign you to a team based on your availability and team need. Hope to see you on the water!

Is experience needed? The great thing about dragon boating is that anyone (literally!) can join.

If you are interested in starting your own team or joining an existing team, contact our office at (503) 581-2004 or dragon@salemmulticultural.org.

before You Paddle

Rowing and dragon boat paddling are both team-based water sports that involve propelling a boat through water at high speeds, but they differ significantly in their strokes, techniques, and crew composition.

Rowers sit facing backwards in single file in boats referred to as 'shells' and row with oars that are attached to the boat. Dragon boaters sit in pairs, with 10 benches and two paddlers on each bench, and face forward using free-hand paddles to drive the boat forward. A standard dragon boat typically has 20 paddlers total, plus a drummer or caller at the bow (front) and a steerperson at the stern (rear) of the boat.
